About Us

Soul City Arts has a passion for using the arts to bring together people divided by culture, faith and ethnicity. Not afraid to address ‘the elephant in the room’, we use the arts as a tool to facilitate open dialogue, counteracting the divides facing modern society.  Our work is characterised by deep visual spectacle and an immersive environment that engages all the senses.

The organization is led by artist and curator Mohammed Ali MBE and a team of creatives. Soul City Arts is based in a reclaimed warehouse space aptly named ‘Port Hope’ in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. We have delivered programmes across the UK and around the globe, but remain committed to delivering events locally.

Soul City Arts prides itself on delivering authentic and meaningful programmes that resonate with local communities. We are an organisation that seeks to understand the people through dialogue and collaboration. What arts organization or NGO worth its salt does not claim to ‘deliver change’ these days? We feel, though, that through our rootedness in community, our working methods and our track record of successful projects, we deliver demonstrable change – when and where it counts.

Founder of Soul City Arts

Mohammed Ali

Mohammed Ali is an award winning artist and curator who founded Soul City Arts in 2008. He has been a pioneer in the urban art movement, fusing street art with Islamic script and patterns, delivering powerful and moving messages. Art meets faith, identity and social change in Ali’s work, adorning the canvas of walls and public spaces. He continues to change the visual landscapes of the cities we live in.

His work serves as a bridge, bringing together communities divided by culture, faith and ethnicity.

In 2008 Ali established Soul City Arts as a global arts organisation based in the city of Birmingham. Together with a growing team, he has brought together artists, activists and communities, delivering the programme from an arts centre he established, aptly named ‘Port Hope’.
